How Do You Do That?

I'm often asked this question by folks viewing my work.  You don't know what's behind the question, particularly since I work mostly in abstraction.  The basic materials consist of cold wax (I use Gamblin), oil paint, pigments, graphite, sometimes metallic foils, lots of mark-making tools, and other stuff lying around.  I like this approach because with cold wax added to oil paint one doesn't have to varnish or "finish" a painting.  When you call it done, it's done!  I also apply paint and wax with a palette knife and scrapers of various kinds.  Ultimately, these panels are bolted together and ready to be hung in my small gallery or in the other galleries that represent me.  I will get into the cold wax medium in more detail later and how I found it.  "Old Door" is a piece done in this medium and then bolted together.  Once dry it is luminous and smooth and can be buffed to a glowing shine..........
